In the past decade, the popularity of skateboards has sky rocketed, creating several competitions for freestyle skateboarding and ramp skateboarding. With the popular names that have come out of these competitions like Tony Hawke, more and more people want to get into skateboarding.
Skateboard lovers like designing and personalizing their skateboards. They change the material of their board and put different designs. Although buying complete skateboards is easier, skateboard lovers still prefer building their own so they can put their personal touches in them. By building your own skateboard, you will be able to decide how your skateboard will perform. The great thing about making your own skateboard is that it doesn't really have to cost you much.
The basic components of a complete skateboard are the deck, trucks and the wheels. The deck is the board where you stand on. The trucks are the metal parts under the board that connect the deck to the wheel. The wheels are responsible for the skateboard's movement.
The first thing you should do is measure the width of the deck you want. Narrow decks that are less than 8 inches are great for doing flip and maneuvering tricks while the wider decks are great for increasing stability for ramp, half pipes and pool activities. After measuring the width, you should now measure the length of the deck. Regular length for complete skateboards is 31-33 inches. Shorter boards are appropriate for beginners and kids as they will have an easier time controlling the board. Longer boards are suited for expert riders.
Now, it is time to choose the material of your deck. If you are on a tight budget, you can make use of plastic. Usually, skaters prefer a wooden deck. Professional riders would normally have an aluminum or fiberglass deck for their complete skateboards. The last thing about the deck is picking its concavity. Concavity is how much the nose, tail and sides of the boards are raised. A flat one is better for beginners while expert like a more concave deck.
The next is choosing the trucks. Trucks can be easily bought and they are sized between 4 ¾"- 5 ½". You can pick wider trucks for a stable landing but you will also have a limited radius to turn when doing tricks.
Last, you must decide what wheels you want to install. Skateboard wheels are made of polyurethane and can be bought in sizes 52mm-60mm. If you are a beginner, getting smaller wheels will give you a better control of the skateboard as the wheels are lighter.
As you can see, making your own complete skateboard doesn't really need to be expensive at all. You will even have fun making your own skateboard and have the satisfaction of riding your own creation. If you get bored with the design or want to change specifications, you can easily do another complete skateboard again.
